Scapa Healthcare is a strategic healthcare, and consumer medical device outsource partner that collaborates with clients to design, develop and manufacture innovative medical devices and bring them to market quickly. The company’s vertically integrated turnkey solution assists clients throughout the product lifecycle from initial design, development, and formulation to the assembly process and subsequent packaging, printing, and sterilization to logistics and global distribution. “We have the capability to scale with our customers’ demands and their market growth while ensuring quality and cost efficiency,” mentions John Petreanu, President of Scapa Healthcare.
Scapa operates in three different market segments: advanced wound care, consumer wellness, and medical device fixation. Their wound care technologies are primarily formulated around silicones, hydrogels, hydrocolloids, and acrylic adhesive based products, as well as professional skincare topical solutions. In addition, Scapa has deep knowledge of biopolymers and collagen materials that gives them the ability to enhance the performance of advanced wound care products for infection control. The company also provides advanced materials such as super-absorbent, non-wovens, films, and foams that, combined with their medical adhesives, allow Scapa to really tailor the material systems to their client’s needs in a much wider array of products.
Scapa’s consumer wellness technology revolves around topical skincare products such as liquids, lotions, gels, creams, and medical aids such as OTC first-aid bandages and health and beauty aids.
Scapa provides adhesive interface components for vital monitoring and diagnostic systems in the medical device fixation space, including pulse oximetry and continuous glucose monitoring devices. Scapa’s extensive knowledge in adhesive coating enables them to take substrates, formulate target-specific adhesives, and simultaneously consolidate those with high-speed conversion to deliver the next generation of fixation solutions for various skin friendly applications. “Our vertically integrated manufacturing, materials expertise, and turnkey solutions allow us to support our customers streamline their development and commercialization processes,” remarks Petreanu.
When it comes to R&D, Scapa focuses on two areas. One is outside-in R&D, where customers scan their products looking for opportunities for further improvement.
For example, an improved hydrocolloid can perform certain healing activities from an anti microbial perspective. The other is inside-out R&D, where Scapa looks at its own technology to see if there is a window for improvement in them. For instance, a hydrogel technology can be used in new or non traditional applications other than wound care.
Scapa also provides regulatory services to its clients. The company has two centers of excellence, in the US and UK, with dedicated regulatory subject matter experts that provide customized regulatory services. Customers can ask for a specific product compliance procedure or full support bringing a new product to market or registering existing products in different locations.
Scapa further provides logistics services to its partners and delivers the products in any way they need, from shipping the client’s goods to secondary production facilities to providing them with a warehouse to ship their products independently. Not stopping there, Scapa offers advanced sterilization services to ensure clients’ safety and compliance of their products. “We offer in house gamma sterilization services, and in many cases, we also partner with third-party vendors if our customers require additional sterilization services,” mentions Petreanu.
Our vertically integrated manufacturing, materials expertise and turnkey solutions allow us to support our customers streamline their development and commercialization processes
With many companies facing supply chain issues during the pandemic, Scapa is better positioned to face these challenges when compared to their competitors. By leveraging their global and vertically integrated manufacturing footprint, Scapa can exploit nearshoring and onshoring opportunities.
With a continuous focus on innovation, Scapa has been able to bring differentiated solutions to its customers and significantly grow its business and global footprint over the years. In 2021, SWM acquired Scapa, a leading global performance materials company, enhancing Scapa’s portfolio of advanced medical materials. “With a greater than ever value proposition that includes vertically integrated materials expertise and turnkey solutions, Scapa Healthcare is positioned to drive incremental value for our customers by helping them streamline their operations at various stages of the product life cycle,” Petreanu concludes.
